When the distant tropical island of Wistania is found to have a wealth of magical gems hidden inside it, the Minsan Empire deploys a large army to conquer the territories for their own. But a mysterious epidemic called redsight makes much of the native population stronger, faster, and more violent, forcing the Minsans to retreat. One of these Minsans is Corporal Lingon Çamain, a poet and logistics officer, carrying a sealed box that he believes may have one of these magical gems. He’s ordered to take the box to Minsa, but his battalion is brutally attacked by the redsights, leaving him the sole survivor.

With nothing but his rifle, poem journal, and the box, Lingon must navigate himself back to the eastern shore. But on the way, he forms an unlikely bond with a young Wistanian boy who doesn’t speak his language. The boy is also travelling east and searching for a cure for his own redsight which he suppresses under a blindfold. They work together on their long, perilous, and confusing journey, but Lingon worries that the Minsan Army may frame him as a traitor if they find out.
